ACFS is a rapidly growing specialist 3PL servicing some of Australia’s largest retailers. When it won a contract to support the expansion of a new national hardware business in Australia, ACFS needed to move quickly to expand its DC network, building a new DC in Derrimut in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Dematic designed a ColbyRACK solution that optimised the cube within the 16,000 square metre DC by closely following the facility’s roofline profile.

The ColbyRACK pallet storage solution features over 20 different elevations and accommodates a range of pallet heights from 600 mm up to 1.4 m.

Space-efficiency within the DC is optimised through the widespread use of double-deep ColbyRACK, with a top pallet beam level of around 10 m. Storage flexibility is also optimised with every location capable of storing the heaviest pallets, which means ACFS can put any pallet anywhere in the system.

ColbyRACK storage solution features

A feature of the space-efficient ColbyRACK storage solution is the use of double deep rack beams with heavy-duty welded cleats to support the guide rails that assist the safe placement of pallets in double deep storage systems.

The guide rails in double deep storage systems, especially those in higher bays, take a fair bit of punishment over the course of their working life, and Colby's use of heavy-duty welded cleats with bolted connections provides a significantly stronger and safer solution, when compared to other tek-screwed systems.

The combination of Colby’s exclusive RackMan software, experienced team of specialist structural engineers, and ISO9001 quality-assured manufacturing facilities, ensured ACFS received the highest quality products and the optimum solution for their business.

Impressive products, service and delivery

ACFS Managing Director, Arthur Tzaneros, said he had been very impressed by the ability and commitment to deliver the job in such a short timeframe.

“The Colby storage design team certainly presented the most space-efficient option and its local manufacturing capacity enabled it to meet our demanding start-up schedule for the project,” said Mr Tzaneros.

“The racking is well designed and the quality of manufacture is first class. As soon as the racking started to go up in the DC our people could clearly see this was a step up. We have been particularly impressed by the performance of the Colby Protect-a-RACK system."

“Our DCs are high volume, high velocity facilities and even our best forklift drivers will have the occasional collision with racks during busy day-to-day operations. The Colby Protect-a-RACK system does exactly what it says it does and, to date, we haven’t had to repair a single piece of racking.”

Following the success of the Melbourne project, ACFS also contracted supply of ColbyRACK for part of a new DC in Sydney.
